Preparation of monovalent nickel surface complexes by selective hydrogen photoreduction of supported nickel(II) ions: their activity in acetylene cyclotrimerization and ethylene oligomerization

Description
Summary:Coordinatively unsaturated NiI ions on silica and alumina surfaces were obtained by photoreduction of NiII ions in hydrogen at 77 K. The complexation of these ions with CO, H2, N2, O2, H2O and NH3 molecules was studied by EPR. Photoreduced samples showed considerably higher catalytic activities in acetylene cyclotrimerization and ethylene oligomerization reactions at room temperature than the catalysts thermally reduced in H2 Adsorption of C2H2 and C2H4 resulted in disappearance of the Nii EPR signals. It is suggested that these ions could be precursors of active complexes in oligomerization reactions. The similarity with homogeneous catalysis by organonickel complexes is emphasized.
