Summary:We report our ellipsometric measurements of the complex index of refraction N = n − ik and the complex magneto-optic coefficient Q = Q1 − iQ2 for the alloy systems M1−xRx, where M = Fe, Co and R = Gd, Tb, Sm and x is in the range 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.5. The results indicate that the magneto-optical properties reflect polarization of the itinerant electrons by the transition-metal sublattice rather than the total magnetization.
