Summary:The establishment of the United Kingdom Waste Materials Exchange in 1974 and its operation during the period 1974–1979 are reviewed. Savings made by users of the Exchange in respect of improved raw material utilization and through lower waste disposal costs are discussed. The report concludes that during five years of operation wastes worth at least £8.5 million were reclaimed and savings of £1–1.5 million were made in waste disposal costs. Additionally important other benefits arose from energy conservation and reduced enrivonmental pollution.
