Summary:X-ray photoelectron spectra of phthalide-based polymers and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of monomers have been recorded. Interpretation of the first bands of the polymers has been carried out on the basis of a comparison with the ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of related monomers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to observe changes in the ionization energy of the π-band in polyphthalide induced by iodine doping.
