Summary:We present a first order formulation of d = 11 supergravity in terms of an elementary connection field ω μ ij, the vielbein e μ i and gravitino ψ μ α. The lagrangian has a gauge invariance which mixes the base indices μ and tangent indices i, j of the spin connection ω μ ij . The antisymmetric tensor A μvλ is shown to emerge as part of ω μ ij in the solution of its equation of motion, and to have the geometric meaning of torsion.
