Summary:If the homogeneous width of one of the levels (either upper or lower) of the transition of a gas medium (the particles of the gas are treated as two level systems) is narrow enough, then in the intensities of wave there may occur a very narrow spectral peak. If the width of one of the levels tends to zero, the width of the peak tends also to zero. A simple method for the determination of both the whole width (γ ab) of the transition and the ratio of homogeneous widths of the levels (γ a/γ b) is proposed.
