Summary:The interaction of a nonlinear Langmuir wave packet corresponding to a periodic solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, with thermal particles is considered. The mechanism of interaction is nonlinear Landau damping. The wave packet is slowed down due to the interaction but its amplitude remains essentially unchanged. The characteristics scale length of the slowing down is determined.
