Description
Summary:This Letter reports the invention of a new type of optical atom trap, which we call a vortex trap. The vortex-force trapping mechanism allows stable trapping with spontaneous forces required in only one or two dimensions. We achieve performance comparable to the conventional Zeeman-shift optical trap. Possible applications include the production of a spin-polarized cloud of trapped atoms and the extension of one-dimensional trapping schemes to three-dimensional traps.
