Description
Summary:A polarographic method is described for the determination of the permeability coefficient of polymer membranes towards oxygen dissolved in water. The system is characterized by strong stirring on both sides of the membrane to evaluate boundary layer effects on the permeability. The permeability coefficients are measured as a function of stirring rate and of thickness and area of the membrane. The permeabilities of polytetrafluoroethylene, polystyrene, polydimethylsiloxane, poly-4-methyl-1-pentene-acrylate copolymers and hydrogels were measured. Our device allows the determination of the absolute permeability P M with a single sample of any material, because of the easy variation of the area, and the determination of P M with a single measurement when P M ⩽30 × 10 −10 cm 3 (STP)-cm/cm −2-sec-cmHg.
