Summary:Some recently synthesized 9,10-anthraquinone and 9-anthrone derivatives were studied to characterize their abilities in the solvent extraction and membrane transport of metal ions. In general, 9,10-anthraquinones were found to be more effective carriers than 9-anthrones for metal ions. 1,8-Dihydroxy-2,7-bis(prop-2′-enyl)-9-anthraquinone (L5) was found to act as an excellent carrier for the specific and uphill transport of Ca2+ ion through the organic liquid membrane designed.
