Summary: | Four samples ranging from lignite to high rank bituminous coals were subjected to acetylation and reductive acetylation. Both reactions resulted in the production of high yields of extract from lignite on Soxhlet extraction. From IR studies of the raw and reacted samples, the inability of these reactions to effect high solubility in the mature coal samples is interpreted to be due to the gradual decrease and final disappearance of the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups as one proceeds from lignite to mature coals. |
