The intensity ratios and polarization of spectral lines emitted by secondary particles during bombardment of zinc and copper targets by helium ions
Light emitted during scattering of helium ions of 8 keV energy on Cu and Zn targets (mono- and polycrystalline) was analyzed. In the spectral region between 430 nm and 650 nm, lines of He I, emitted by neutralized primary ions, and lines of Cu I and Zn I, due to atoms sputtered from the target, were...

Summary: | Light emitted during scattering of helium ions of 8 keV energy on Cu and Zn targets (mono- and polycrystalline) was analyzed. In the spectral region between 430 nm and 650 nm, lines of He I, emitted by neutralized primary ions, and lines of Cu I and Zn I, due to atoms sputtered from the target, were observed. The rates of polarization for the Zn I triplet (468 nm, 472 nm, 481 nm) and for the He-I line 587.6 nm were measured. Within the limits of experimental error the spectral lines are unpolarized. The intensity ratios of components of the Zn I triplet were estimated. Taking into account the experimental data, a possible mechanism of excitation and radiationless relaxation of atoms sputtered from the target by ions of a few keV energy is briefly discussed. |
