Coherent production of the p π+π− enhancement at 1470 MeV by 28 GeV/c protons on neon

Summary: | In a bubble-chamber experiment with 28 GeV/
c protons in a neon-hydrogen mixture, coherent production of p

π
− on neon has been observed. All of the available evidence indicates that the enhancement in p
π
+
π
− mass which we see in the region of 1470 MeV is the same as has been observed in high-energy pp experiments. A double-Regge model gives quite good agreement with the data, without needing any explicit resonance production. Calculations with a nuclear absorption model have given limits of between 30 mb and 70 mb for the emerging p
π
+
π
− system with mass less than 1.6 GeV. The cross section for coherent production of p
π
+
π
− in this mass range is found to be 470 ± 100
