Summary: | Non-local charges [1, 2] are studied in the general setting of local quantum field theory. It is shown, that these charges can be represented as polynomials in the incoming respectively outgoing fields with coefficients (kernels) which are subject to specific constraints. For the restricted class of models of a scalar, massive, self-interacting particle in four dimensions, a more detailed analysis shows that all non-local charges of the generic type (genus 2) are products of generators of the Poincaré group. This analysis, which is based on the macroscopic causality properties of the
S-matrix, seems to indicate that less trivial examples of non-local charges can only exist in two dimensions. |
