Magnetic non-equivalence of the α-methylene protons in alkyl chlorosulphites and the effects of temperature and of pyridinium chloride

Description
Summary:Magnetic non-equivalence of the α-methylene protons in a series of alkyl chlorosulphites results from the asymmetry of the SOCl grouping. Partial collapse to a simple resonance pattern occurs on heating pure neopentyl chlorosulphite to 100° and is attributed to the onset of bimolecular exchange of chlorine. Trace amounts of chloride ion cause rapid chlorine exchange and consequent loss of non-equivalence.
