Summary: | Two different approaches are currently proposed for the theory of the kinetics and mechanism of atomization in GFAAS. One assumes that the dominant role is the adsorption/desorption process, and the second assumes that condensation/evaporation is dominant. The principal arguments for the first approach are: the peak tailing; the similarity in peak shape for various sample masses; the low activation energies of release for some metals; and the low temperature appearance of some low volatility species in the gas phase. We provide an experimental and theoretical analysis to reveal that these arguments are not properly substantiated. The second approach appears to be preferable for explaining the many experimental facts and in the quantitative evaluation of the kinetics. |
