Description
Summary:The Aqueous Lithium Salt Blanket concept (ALSB) has been proposed for implementation in next-generation fusion devices. One of its potential problems is the tritium concentration in the main coolant loop, which can be as high as 50 Ci/l. The paper considers an approach that can reduce the tritium level without increasing the capacity of the Tritium Removal System (TRS). In particular, at specified intervals during the machine operation the coolant solution from the blanket will be exchanged with detritiated coolant solution. The tritiated solution can be held in temporary storage, and be processed while the fusion device is shut down. For next-generation machines with continuous operation periods of days to weeks, this approach can result in a significant decrease in tritium concentrations at modest increase in overall tritium system cost and tritium inventory.
