Description
Summary:This paper proposes a cheap, maintenance-free generator suitable for maximum wind energy capture. It can be designed for low speed applications, where it could be rigidly coupled to a Sandia-17-m Darrieus wind turbine without the need of a gearbox. The generator is operated at varying shaft speeds between 38 rpm and 76 rpm. Its torque is regulated so that energy extraction is maximized over the whole variable speed range of the turbine, by controlling two switching angles (switch-on and switch-off angles of the generator's excited phase winding). This generating system may be either connected to the main grid via a simple electronic circuit to provide a good quality power or to a storage battery for generating electrical energy at remote areas.
