Description
Summary:There are very few published data for barium (Ba) in atmospheric precipitation but the available data together with aerosol studies suggest that Ba may be enriched in the atmosphere over levels predicted from crustal and marine sources. To investigate Ba atmospheric cycling further, 108 precipitation samples collected at five rural or remote sites around the North Atlantic were analysed for barium by inductively coupled plasma emissions spectroscopy. The results of this study suggest that barium from marine sources contributes little to the total concentration in precipitation. Crustal and anthropogenic source are, however, significant though the relative importance of both varies at the different sites.
