The photolysis of CO at 193 nm in the liquid and gas phases

The photolysis of CO at 193 nm, which excites the v′ = 2 level of the ã( 3Π) state, has been studied in the liquid phase at 77 K and the gas phase at room temperature. Products observed were CO 2 and C 3O 2, with quantum yields of CO 2 of about 10 −2 and 10 −3 in the gas and the liquid respectively....

Description
Summary:The photolysis of CO at 193 nm, which excites the v′ = 2 level of the ã( 3Π) state, has been studied in the liquid phase at 77 K and the gas phase at room temperature. Products observed were CO 2 and C 3O 2, with quantum yields of CO 2 of about 10 −2 and 10 −3 in the gas and the liquid respectively. Quantum yields of C 3O 2 were about 1% of the CO 2 in both phases. Ozone was also a product and was shown to have been derived from traces (20 – 30 ppm) of O 2 present in the CO. Mechanisms of product formation are discussed.
