Description
Summary:The product channels in the photolysis of gaseous HOCl were determined in a continuous-flow system coupled to a mass spectrometer using molecular beam sampling. Filtered light in the range 290 nm < λ < 390 nm from a mercury high pressure lamp was used in the experiments. The primary photofragments were scavenged by additives present in the gas flow and converted to stable species. From the quantitative determination of the products formed it is concluded that the reaction HOCl + h ν → OH + Cl is the predominant decomposition channel, with the other pathways being less than 5% probable.
