Summary:The effect of alumino-silicate clay on the hydration of cement is examined through the proton spin-lattice relaxation time (T 1's) of the water involved in the hydration process. The evolution of these relaxation times was then correlated with the evolution of compressive strength measurements performed on similar samples. An observed difference in the evolution of T 1 between a reference sample and the cement composites is tentatively attributed to the different evolution of porosity in the samples. Compressive strength measurements that have been performed on mortar OPC samples with the same clay concentrations indicate that the addition of clay increases the strength of the mortars during the early stages of hydration (10 to 100 hours). Additional preliminary strength measurements on clay/concrete OPC composites show that the addition of clay also leads to in increase of the final (28 day) compressive strength of the composites samples.
