Summary: | The response of CR-39 to protons was studied as a function of energy and direction. Using electrochemical etching, without pre-etching, protons from 30 keV to 2.7 MeV were detected with nearly 100% efficiency and 10 keV protons were detected with lower efficiency. The critical angle to the normal, beyond which protons are not detected, is substantially smaller for electrochemical etching than for chemical etching. This angle increases for increasing energy up to 145 keV but decreases again above 400 keV. The neutron response calculated from these results is flat to within ± 30% from 70 keV to 6 MeV and is in reasonable agreement with the measured neutron response. |
