Summary: | A method for the selective cleavage of glycuronosidic linkages in polysaccharides has been evaluated with the model compounds. The method involves Hofmann degradation of hexopyranuronamide residues, followed by mild hydrolysis with acid of the resulting 5-aminopentopyranose residues. The pentodialdoses produced by this process from several model hexopyranosiduronic acids have been characterised as pentitol acetates, following their reduction with borohydride and acetylation. Application of the method to birch xylan resulted in removal of
ca. 94% of the (terminal) uronic acid residues, without effective hydrolysis of other glycosidic linkages. |
