Single crystal and far IR analysis of some lanthanide thiophosphates

Summary:The single crystal structures of GdPS 4 ( 1), DyPS 4 ( 2), and ErPS 4 ( 3) are reported. In addition, the far infrared (IR) spectrum of 3 and NdPS 4 ( 4) are reported. All three compounds crystallize in the tetragonal I4 1/ acd space group. Unit cell dimensions are GdPS 4: a=10.709(7), b=10.709(7), and c=19.102(17) Å; DyPS 4: a=10.7305(11), b=10.7305(11), and c=19.111(3) Å; ErPS 4: a=10.611(5), b=10.611(5), and c=18.947(13) Å. Far IR spectra are consistent with slightly distorted tetrahedra for the PS 4 −3 anions. The compounds reported here are isomorphous to several other lanthanide thiophosphates. The compounds ErPS 4, GdPS 4, and DyPS 4 have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, the far infrared spectrum of ErPS 4 and NdPS 4 are reported. All three compounds crystallize in the tetragonal I4 1/ acd space group. Far infrared absorption spectra down to 200 cm −1 are consistent with slightly distorted tetrahedra for the PS 4 −3 anions. The coordination of the eight sulfur atoms around the lanthanide atom is bisdisphenoidal. The compounds reported here are isomorphous to several other MPS 4 lanthanide thiophosphates.
