Summary:Motility of the intestine is controlled by combination of the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system (ENS). We arrempted to clarify events related to ENS controlled motility. Use isolated the rat duodenum, ileum, colon and rectum and effects of caster oil were examined. Smooth muscle of the entire intestine, in strip form, was suspended in an organ bath of tyrode solution bubbled with mixed gass (0_2 :C0_2 =95:5) and maintained at 34.5±0.5℃. The strips of tissue used were approx. 5 mm wide, 20 mm long. Muscle contraction was recorded isometorically and a personal computer was used. The load applied to the tissue was approx. 0.5 g. Spontanous motility was analyzed using a special program (DSSDDWHD V22, Nihon Kohden) controlled by personal computer. Parameters of motor index (amplitude, contraction, force, area, and frequency) were obtained. One hr after caster oil had been orally administered to the rats, the motility of colon and rectum significantly, in contraction amplitude and frequency. These cathartics can affect intestinal motility, ex vivo. Measurement of motility of the isolated intestine can be used to evaluate. Cathartics and gastrokinetic agents which have a direct effect on the intestinal tube.
