Summary: | We investigated the effect of taurine on acute intoxication of paraquat (PQ) in beagles. The continuous infusion of taurine markedly protected against the PQ-induced oliguria and this effect was dose-dependent and appeared to be specific. Pharmacokinetic studies revealed that taurine infusion increased the blood concentration of PQ, while the excretion into the urine was unaltered. The net content of PQ in the kidney was greatly reduced by taurine , in a dose-dependent fashion . These results suggest that the observed protective effect of taurine on acute intoxication of PQ in beagles may be associated with an inhibition of penetration of this compound into vital tissues. |
