Description
Summary:A white coating can form on LiB305 (LBO) crystals grown in an ambient air atmosphere due to a surface decomposition process that occurs at high temperatures. These crystals crack severely during cooling. A study to determine the effects of the atmosphere on the stability of LBO crystal surfaces was carried out. In all cases, the surfaces of crystals exposed to atmospheres containing water vapor at high temperatures decomposed to form the lithium-rich compound, Li3BTO12. Surfaces exposed to water-free atmospheres, such as dry nitrogen or dry air, remained undamaged. LBO crystals grown under dry nitrogen did not exhibit surface decomposition during growth and did not crack on cooling.
