Description
Summary:At room temperature, XeF 2 crystals do not react to any appreciable extent with UO 2, U 3O 8 or ZrO 2 powders but these mixtures can be induced to react in air without heating by the addition of a drop of water. There appeared to be distinct stages of reaction: (i) an initial, relatively slow reaction in the aqueous phase and (ii) a subsequent violent reaction. Depending upon the conditions employed, the products of reaction were either the metal fluoride or oxyfluoride.
