On the relation of morpho-physiological expression of barley to gamma radiation exposure

The influence of gamma radiation on growth, nucleic acids and protein metabolism was investigated in barley. Dry barley seeds irradiated with 60Co gamma rays up to 62 kR were germinated and grown in the dark. All determinations were made on the 7th day and expressed on a per shoot basis. A linear in...

Description
Summary:The influence of gamma radiation on growth, nucleic acids and protein metabolism was investigated in barley. Dry barley seeds irradiated with 60Co gamma rays up to 62 kR were germinated and grown in the dark. All determinations were made on the 7th day and expressed on a per shoot basis. A linear inverse relationship was found to exist between radiation exposure and growth, as well as with macromolecular contents, from 13 to 55 kR. Regression of these criteria on radiation exposure was highly significant. The radiation-induced decrease worked out on the basis of the regressions was found to be as follows: Free nucleotides > DNA > Freshweight = Freeamino acids > Protein > RNA > Shoot length.
