Mechanisms of action in flame retardant reinforced nylon 6
Powder inorganic fillers (talc, CaCO 3, ZnCO 3, MnO 2) improve fire retardant action in the system nylon 6/ammonium polyphosphate (APP). Mechanistic studies showed that talc, CaCO 3 and ZnCO 3 do not interfere in the interaction between APP and nylon 6. In the presence of APP, MnO 2 oxidizes nylon 6...

Summary: | Powder inorganic fillers (talc, CaCO
3, ZnCO
3, MnO
2) improve fire retardant action in the system nylon 6/ammonium polyphosphate (APP). Mechanistic studies showed that talc, CaCO
3 and ZnCO
3 do not interfere in the interaction between APP and nylon 6. In the presence of APP, MnO
2 oxidizes nylon 6 enhancing the char yield from the polymer. The fillers react with APP producing phosphates which increase solid residue, improve thermal shielding properties of the char and give inorganic glasses which hinder feeding of the flame by combustible gases. |
