Summary: | The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical performance of two daily disposable hydrogel lenses: DAILIES
™ (CIBA Vision, Duluth, GA, USA), and 1-Day ACUVUE® (Vistakon, Jacksonville, FL, USA). This prospective study was conducted on 190 subjects by 25 investigators in three countries (Canada, Norway, and the United Kingdom). The study was organized into two parts. Part 1 was a randomized, double-masked, contralateral comparison which lasted for one week. After one week, the subjects were asked to choose a preferred lens to wear in both eyes for both eyes for part II, an observational, bilateral, independent group comparison of four weeks duration. There was a strong subjective wearer preference for the DAILIES lens; preferred 65% to 14% at dispensing, with 21% having no preference, and preferred 73% to 27% after 1 week of contralateral lens wear. Lens comfort and insertion handling were the most often cited reasons for lens preference. Investigator evaluations revealed small, yet statistically significant advantages for the DAILIES lens in the areas of ‘movement’, ‘centration’, ‘push-up test’, and ‘overall fit’. Both lens types received high ratings for anterior segment response, wettability, visual acuity, and overall lens performance. Contralateral trial lens fitting can provide useful information to determine the optimum daily disposable lens for your contact lens wearing population. |
