Description
Summary:The conduction properties of the ‘giant’ magnetoresistance (GMR) material La 1− x Sr x MnO 3, are believed to be related to local lattice distortions but almost all recent diffraction work on this and related materials concentrates on the ‘time-average’ crystal and magnetic structures which are determined by Bragg scattering, and there has as yet been no microscopic picture of the local disorder. We have measured total structure factors, including both Bragg and diffuse scattering, of some perovskite materials by powder neutron diffraction allowing the lattice disorder to be modelled by reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) methods.
