Summary: | The Upper Cenozoic sedimentary column in the Parana basin contains fundamental information on the environmental and biological evolution of this part of South America. However, chronostratigraphic interpretations are quite contradictory. The present paper introduces a different chronostratigaraphic scheme, partly by conducting an extensive lithostratigraphic analysis of vertical and horizontal distribution of sedimentary units and partly through paleomagnetic analyses at several localities. The magnetostratigraphy obtained is the result of the integration of several profiles. However, fairly continuous paleomagnetic records were obtained in Villa Urquiza, La Toma and particularly in Aldea Brasilera. Records of normal/reverse polarity changes obtained in Entre Rios by applying AF demagnetization, were related to the Brunhes, Matuyama, and Gauss Chrons, and to the Jaramillo, Olduvai, and Kaena Subchrons. Lithostratigraphic correlation has been proposed using water wells and deeper borehole records. |
