Summary: | Mycobacteriosis is a common infection in pet birds and is most frequently caused by
M. avium or
M. genavense. Symptoms of mycobacteriosis include chronic illness characterized by weight loss, diarrhea, dyspnea, lameness and poor feathering although a significant number of birds die acutely without recognized symptoms. Clinical findings include hepatosplenomegaly, thickened intestinal walls, intra-coelomic and subcutaneous granulomas and an inflammatory leucogram. Mycobacteriosis is best diagnosed based on the observation of acid fast bacteria in biopsy samples. Recent advances in culturing and identifying mycobacterial strains will hopefully lead to improved diagnosis and a better understanding of the role various strains play in avian disease. |
