Summary: | Sodium pertechnetate was used to study radiopharmaceutical distribution in patients with carcinoma of the stomach. In the present case, two normal subjects and three patients suffering from gastric carcinoma were investigated with sodium pertechnetate. One hundred and eighty-five MBq of tracer was injected intravenously and anterior and posterior images of the stomach were obtained with a large field of view gamma camera and a low energy, converging hole collimator (30 min post-injection). Scintigrams of two normal subjects demonstrated uniform distribution of the radiopharmaceutical in the stomach. In three cases of gastric carcinoma the radiopharmaceutical was non-uniform (cold areas). In two patients who underwent surgery, the specimens obtained also tallied with scan findings. In one patient, in whom a laparotomy was carried out, the disease was found to have spread extensively and was inoperable. The scan revealed a huge cold area, covering almost the entire stomach. In the three cases a barium meal and oesophagogastric duodenoscopy agreed with the radionuclide study. |
