Summary: | Nb
2O
5 and NbCl
5 have been used as catalysts for the carboxylation of epoxides. Temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, and reaction time influence the conversion yield. The role of the solvent has been investigated: amides as solvent are good promoters, and the addition of small amounts of dichloromethane (0.1
ml) contributes to produce high conversion yields. The reaction is 100% chemio-selective.
The synthesis of organic cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO
2 is described. The role of the solvent is discussed, together with that of Nb(V) catalysts (Nb
2O
5 and NbCl
5). The reaction is very selective and affords the conversion of epoxides into the relevant carbonates in high yield. |
