Observation of the ν1 fundamental band in sulphur trioxide induced by symmetry breaking upon 18O substitution

The infrared (IR) absorption spectrum of gaseous SO3 enriched with 18O is studied. The ν1 band of S16O218O 1040±2 cm−1 is observed in the IR spectrum, whereas it is inactive for S16O3. The isotope shift measured in ν1 is 28±2 cm−1. The integrated intensity of this band was measured to 5.7±1.6 atm−1...

Description
Summary:The infrared (IR) absorption spectrum of gaseous SO3 enriched with 18O is studied. The ν1 band of S16O218O 1040±2 cm−1 is observed in the IR spectrum, whereas it is inactive for S16O3. The isotope shift measured in ν1 is 28±2 cm−1. The integrated intensity of this band was measured to 5.7±1.6 atm−1 cm−2. These results agree with our calculations, carried out within the framework of the valence force model. The opportunity to realize isotopically selective photolysis of S16O218O molecules with excitation of the ν1 mode by combined IR+UV laser radiation is discussed.
