Summary: | The first case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in North America was detected in New York in the summer of 1999. Since then, there has been increasing number of WNV infections in this country. In a small number of cases, the virus infects the brain causing meningoencephalitis that can prove fatal. Serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in our patient showed gradual progression of the disease from the basal ganglia, thalami to the rhombencephalon. |
