Description
Summary:In women of reproductive age, thyroid dysfunction is common. Hypothyroidism interferes with women reproductive physiology, reducing the odds of pregnancy and adversely affecting pregnancy outcome. To determine the frequency of hypothyroidism in women with recurrent pregnancy loss in the first trimester. A total of 163 pregnant women with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss at 12 weeks’ gestation, confirmed by pregnancy test or ultrasonography (group 1), and 170 women of the same age with at least one successful pregnancy and no history of pregnancy loss, selected as controls (group 2), were enrolled in the study. Levels of the thyroid hormones T3, T4 and TSH were estimated in the two groups of women. The means were compared using the Student t-test. Hypothyroidism occurred in 7 cases in group 1 (4.1%) and in one in the control group. The differences in serum levels of T3, T4 and TSH were significant in favour of group 1. The study shows that hypothyroidism is statistically significant associated with recurrent miscarriage in the first trimester and suggests that the diagnosis of hypothyroidism should be systematically needs to be systematically included when investigating the etiology.
