Summary:This article provides an overview of how three branches of science, namely Systems Biology, Synthetic Biology and Control Theory might be interlaced to help solve relevant problems in medicine and biotechnology. It aims to provide for control engineers the basic background to understand the roles played (and challenges posed) by these fields during the set up of biological control systems. It also shows how the concepts from Supervisory Control Theory can be adapted to treat cellular control problems.
