The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), is an indoor sanitary pest worldwide and seriously threatens human health. With the rapid development of insecticide resistance, biological control has gradually become the most promising strategy for cockroach control. In this review, we focus on the latest advances in the use of the following materials for biocontrol of the German cockroach: entomopathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses, natural enemies, nematodes and plant-derived substances. In addition, we make an in-depth discussion on the practical application of these materials in combination with other views and put forward new ideas about how to enhance the insecticidal efficacy of entomopathogens, such as through the construction of recombinant microorganisms and the combined utilization of pathogens and chemical pesticides or synergistic agents. Based on some new technologies (e.g., gene engineering and microinjection), we ultimately shed light on new perspectives for the biological control of B. germanica: the application of the well-known Wolbachia, paratransgenesis and RNA interference (RNAi). |
