Description
Summary:•Novel approach to assess the tone quality of the flute.•Introduces recurrence-based phase space analysis in studying musical notes.•Recurrence plot and recurrence network of various notes are analysed.•The topological measures are employed to assess the frequency purity of notes. Recurrence-based phase space analysis of dynamical systems has emerged as an essential tool in unwrapping the behaviour of nonlinear systems. The paper delineates the potential of recurrence plot (RP) and recurrence network (RN) along with their topological measures in analysing musical notes played by the wind instrument, the flute. The sound signals of the notes C4, G4, C5, C6, and G6 are subjected to wavelet analysis to understand the frequency purity. Having understood the phase portrait, RP and RN are constructed, and their measures are computed to understand the quality of the note. The co-existence of several frequency components other than that of the notes gets reflected in the topology of the phase portrait, RP, and RN. This suggests the possible application of recurrence analysis in assessing the quality of musical instruments. [Display omitted]
