Summary:In this work, a thermal nitridation treatment was carried out on the new high-strength and toughness Zr-Ti-Al-V alloy. The composition, thickness, corrosion resistance, hardness and wear resistance of thermal nitridation film were systematically studied. From the extracted results, it was demonstrated that the thermal nitridation film was mainly composed of nitrides and oxides of Zr and Ti, while the presence of the Al2Zr compound phase was also found. The hot nitrided samples were better resistant to corrosion than the matrix in 3.5% NaCl solution. The hardness and wear resistance of the hot nitrided samples were also improved. [Display omitted] •Thermal nitriding film was prepared on the surface of high-strength Zr alloy.•The film was mainly composed of ZrN, TiN, ZrO2 and TiO2 phases.•The Zr7O8N4 and Al2Zr compound were also observed in the XRD pattern.•The samples show a great difference in properties in NaCl and HCl solutions.•The hardness and wear resistance of the Zr alloy were greatly improved.
