Summary:A new species of the fossil wood genus Ginkgoxylon (Ginkgoales), Ginkgoxylon arcticum sp. nov., is described from the Lower Cretaceous deposits of Alexandra Land Island, Franz Josef Land Archipelago, Russia. The record of Ginkgoxylon represents the latest stratigraphic occurrence of this taxon in Russia and the first and only one from the Arctic region. •A new species Ginkgoxylon arcticum sp. nov. is described from the Lower Cretaceous of Franz Josef Land (FJL), Russia.•The record of Ginkgoxylon represents the latest stratigraphic occurrence in Russia and the first from the Arctic region.•The study confirms the presence of Ginkgoales in the Arctic region not only on leaf fossils but also on wood fossils.•The Early Cretaceous wood flora of FJL is characterized by many transitional fossils with mixed tracheid radial pitting.
