Summary: | A disparity exists between the idealized representation of design requirement capture as presented by design methodologists and the untidy circumstance found in the real world. Rather than being explicitly methodology based, the design requirement development activity is characterized by a responsive ad hoc approach.
A series of case studies of design requirement development has been conducted in three diverse engineering companies. Insights gained from the case studies allow the construction of a model identifying and organizing the principal factors that influence design requirement development and content. This model can be used to characterize a company in respect of the specific factors which influence its own design requirement capture process, and could be used to assess improved strategies for developing the design requirement in a manner more appropriate to that particular company. |
