Summary: | Lipomas are common benign soft tissue neoplasms, but they are found less in the head and neck region than other sites. There are few reports of parotid lipoma; especially very rarely in the deep lobe of the parotid gland. Surgical intervention in these tumors is challenging because of the probability of injuring the facial nerve, and thus knowledge of the anatomy and meticulous surgical technique are essential.
A 63-year-old male presented with a large slow growing, non-tender, asymptomatic, and soft mass, in right parotid region from eleven years ago. Examination of the facial nerve was normal. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed a well-defined giant bilobe lipoma in the superficial and deep lobe of the right parotid gland. Patient underwent tumor excision with facial nerve preservation. We had no complication after surgery.
Giant lipoma of the deep parotid lobe is extremely rare. The computed tomography (CT) scan helps in an accurate and cost-effective preoperative diagnostic method. Surgical management of deep lobe lipoma should be performed by experienced surgeons because of the need for meticulous dissection of the facia nerve. |
