Metastases of the hypothalamus–neurohypophysis unit mimicking a pituicytoma

Abstract We present a case of a patient with a previous history of microcytic lung cancer and a mass extending from the anterior hypothalamus to the posterior lobe of the hypophysis, including the pituitary stalk, mimicking a pituicytoma [Brat DJ, Scheithauer BW, Staugaitis SM, et al. Description
Summary:Abstract We present a case of a patient with a previous history of microcytic lung cancer and a mass extending from the anterior hypothalamus to the posterior lobe of the hypophysis, including the pituitary stalk, mimicking a pituicytoma [Brat DJ, Scheithauer BW, Staugaitis SM, et al. Pituicytoma: a distinctive low-grade glioma of the neurohypophysis. Am J Surg Pathol 2000;24:362–8; Massie AP. A granular-cell pituicytoma of the neurohypophysis. J Pathol 1979;128:53–6]. However, MRI after chemotherapy revealed a substantial reduction of the lesion size. This evolution helped to demonstrate the metastatic nature of the lesion.
