Summary:The graphite coatings were prepared by the screen-printing technique. The surface and interface morphology were observed, respectively. The engine test under the standard condition was employed to estimate the performance of graphite coating. Results shows that the deposited graphite coatings own the uniform thickness and desirable bond strength. The deposition of graphite coating plays an important role on decreasing friction and resisting the scuffing of cylinder bore. The solid lubricant characteristic of graphite coating can give desirable protection to the coupling elements under harsh conditions, such as cold start or running-in stage. The main wear of graphite coating occurs in the expansion stage of the engine for the high load and thermal deformation. •Real engine test was employed to estimate piston skirt with graphite coating.•The deposition of graphite coating resists the scuffing of cylinder bore•The wear map of piston skirt is investigated.•The wear damage of graphite coating occurs in expansion stage of engine.
