Description
Summary:•The study of the phenomenon of internationalization is discussed along three levels of analysis: a) the enterprising individuals.•b) the entrepreneurial organizations, with their processes of value creation and capture;•c) the inter-organizational level, as represented by networks and related constructs.•The two foundational constructs underlying entrepreneurial internationalization are distance and opportunity,•Distance is a two sided coin, with an ambivalent nature of liability and source of advantage;•Opportunity has an ambiguous nature and origin. This contribution discusses the state of the art of research in International Entrepreneurship. In taking stock of three decades of scientific inquiry in the field, this article also looks ahead, pointing at some future research directions. The latter particularly focus on two aspects: the levels of analysis, individual, organizational and inter-organizational, and the founding constructs of the field, distance and opportunities.
